Judy Blume is the author of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and many other books. In all, Blume has written 28 books for children of all ages. She’s also written four books for adults.
Judy Blume was born in 1938 and grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Blume says that she was always making up stories inside her head as a child, but it wasn’t until later that she started to write her stories down. Blume got married during her first year of college in 1959. She graduated from New York University in 1961 with a degree in education. She has two sons, the first was born in 1961 and the second was born in 1963. Blume eventually got divorced from her husband and would get married two more times.
Judy Blume’s first book, The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo, was published in 1969. It is about a boy who feels like he doesn’t get much attention from his parents because of his older brother and younger sister. In the end, he gets the role of the green kangaroo in his school play.
The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo put Blume on the map as a children’s book author. It also showed how well she understands the problems and feelings of young people. Blume says that she has an extraordinarily good memory of her childhood. She says this is what enables her to write about the feelings and problems of young children.
Blume has written a number of different types of books for children in elementary school, middle school, and high school. She wrote some of her most famous books between 1970 and 1980, including Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Blubber, and Then Again, Maybe I Won’t. Blume says that some of the ideas for her books come from her own life, including the character Fudge. Fudge in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is based on the antics her younger son Larry when he was that age (yikes!). While Larry never swallowed a turtle, Blume got that idea from a news article she read about a toddler who actually did swallow a turtle.
Many people ask Blume where she gets the ideas for her books. Blume says that she always starts her books on the day that something different or unusual happens. Although some of her books were written more quickly, it usually takes Blume about a year to write a book.
These days, Blume spends most of the year living in Key West, Florida with her husband, George Cooper. Blume meets fans of her books all the time and she is always kind to them—most of them are now adults. One of the most common things fans tell her is how much her books meant to them as they were growing up. Judy Blume has tons of fans all over the world. Her books have been translated into 32 different languages. Millions of copies have been sold all over the world and her books continue to appeal to new generations of readers all the time.
