AGES: Prereaders, beginning readers MATERIALS: Animal story, corresponding stuffed animal In recent years, several popular animal characters have stepped out of the pages and onto the toy shelf? Corduroy, Curious George, Paddington, and Babar, to name a few, are now available as stuffed animals. You can even buy books that are packaged with toy pets -- Spot's First Walk, for instance, comes complete with pup. If your child's particular favorite has been reproduced exactly, you are sure to find a generic look-alike. Giving a book pet along with a book is a nice touch for both usual and no-so-usual gift-giving occasions. Perhaps this year a stuffed Velveteen Rabbit can deliver an Easter basket full of bunny books (The Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Moon, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and, of course, The Velveteen Rabbit).
