Ticket to Success: 16,500 Parents Participate in US Airways-RIF “Read with Kids Challenge”

More than 3.8 Million Minutes Logged Online

WASHINGTON—June 2, 2008— Helping to raise awareness about the importance of reading aloud to young children, US Airways and Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., (RIF) announced a successful conclusion to their three-month online “Read with Kids Challenge.” More than 16,500 parents and other adults logged 3.8 million minutes read to children, far surpassing the goal of 1 million minutes read with kids.

“While we are thrilled with the participation and success of the ‘Read with Kids Challenge’, the real winners are the thousands of children who benefited from reading together with their parents and loved ones,” said Doug Parker, US Airways chairman and CEO.

“Reading to our young children is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for success in school and life,” said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF, the nation’s oldest and largest children and families’ literacy organization. “We are grateful for US Airways’ generous support of the ‘Read with Kids Challenge’ and for their commitment to RIF’s  mission to provide children with books to help them develop a lifelong love of reading.”

As part of the “Read with Kids Challenge,” all participants who logged in their minutes read to kids qualified for weekly prize drawings and for the grand prize drawing, which will be announced on June 30, 2008. For the grand prize, US Airways donated a four-day/three-night family vacation to Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Fla. The first runner-up will receive a $1,500 US Airways gift card, and the second runner-up will receive a $500 US Airways gift card.

In February, US Airways, the official airline of RIF, announced its “Fly with US. Read with Kids” program in support of RIF chapters across the country. In addition to the “Read with Kids Challenge,” US Airways distributed copies of the children’s book Come Fly with Maisy by Lucy Cousins to passengers on domestic flights during the month of March. US Airways is also joining RIF to provide 80,000 new books for children in RIF programs in Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Las Vegas; New York City; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Washington, D.C.; and Winston-Salem, N.C.  US Airways’ 3,300-member employee volunteer corps, the Do Crew, are also helping at RIF reading rallies and book distributions.

US Airways is the fifth largest domestic airline employing more than 36,000 aviation professionals worldwide.
