RIF Invites Kids to Show Their Love of Animals with Third Annual Writing Contest
Washington, February 7, 2007—In celebration of Valentine's Day and all things furry and cuddly, the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF®) Reading Planet, an interactive website for children, will launch its third annual animal-themed writing contest, "I Love Animals," on February 14, 2007. The contest will invite children ages 5—15 to write a poem or short essay about an animal—whether pet, animal shelter friend, from the wild, or from a favorite book—that they love. Contest rules can be found on the RIF Reading Planet website at www.rif.org/readingplanet. The site also features animal-themed games, eCards, and booklists. Entries must be received by March 31, 2007. Winning essays from the "I Love Animals" writing contest will be published on the site on April 20, 2007.
National Geographic has generously donated an exciting assortment of prizes. Three grand-prize winners will receive an Animal Adventure prize package which includes:
- A subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine (for winners ages 5— 11) or National Geographic Magazine (for winners ages 12— 15),
- An Encyclopedia of Animals,
- The March of the Penguins book and DVD, and
- An Interactive Atlas for their school library or class.
The grand-prize winners will also receive a $35 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Nine honorable mention winners will receive the National Geographic Animal Fun prize package, which includes:
- A subscription to National Geographic Kids Magazine (for winners ages 5—11) or National Geographic Magazine (for winners ages 12—15), and
- A March of the Penguins book and DVD.

The RIF Reading Planet is the children's section of the larger RIF website (www.rif.org). Aimed at children ages 5 to 15 and updated weekly, the advertising-free site offers an interactive community that encourages and supports reading and writing. Through the site, kids of all ages can join the free RIF Reading Planet Club; design their own homepage; and find writing contests, reading games, activities, and booklists.
