RIF Gift of Reading Awards Gala to Honor Kiwans International, Washington Post and Verizon
WASHINGTON—August 8, 2007—Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) announced today that it will honor Kiwanis International, Washington Post and Verizon at the 3rd annual RIF Gift of Reading Awards Gala on Wednesday, September 26.
"This year's RIF Gift of Reading Award winners have made significant contributions to fostering a culture of literacy and educational achievement in the United States," said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. "We are grateful for their support and look forward to presenting them their awards at the Gala."
The organizations' contributions to literacy and education include:
Kiwanis International for its annual Read Around the World program, support of local RIF programs in the U.S., and Kiwanis clubs projects that address child literacy in fun and creative ways.
Washington Post for its innovative KidsPost daily kids page and book club to encourage children to read, recognition of outstanding educators in the Washington region, and its thorough news coverage of education trends and developments around the country.
Verizon for its award-winning educational resources provided to teachers, parents, and students to foster literacy and learning. The Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity Literacy Network, accessible for free at www.thinkfinity.org, offers an array of online activities, lesson plans and information to support literacy instruction and programs.
In addition, the 10th Annual Anne Richardson RIF Volunteer of the Year Award Winners: Lisa Mertz of Sunbury, Pa.; Lucy Her Many Horses of Rosebud, S.D.; and Oscar Cux of Hawthorne, Calif., will be honored for their donation of time, talent, and energy to children's literacy.
The annual RIF Gift of Reading Awards Gala raises funds to support RIF's mission to provide books and other literacy resources to underserved children throughout the country. This year's event takes place at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. Tickets may be purchased by calling 703-556-0194.
