Reading Is Fundamental Partners with Afterschool Alliance for 11th Annual Lights On Afterschool
Partnership to Promote Reading to Millions of Children in Afterschool Programs
WASHINGTON – October 19, 2010 —Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit, today announced a new partnership with the Afterschool Alliance for the 11th annual Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide rally being celebrated at more than 7,500 events on October 21.
“RIF is proud to partner with Afterschool Alliance to raise awareness of the importance of enriching activities like reading in afterschool programs in communities nationwide,” said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. “Millions of children across the country participate in afterschool programs, and through RIF’s partnership we’ll be able to encourage more children to discover the joy of becoming lifelong readers.”
As part of the partnership, RIF will award six Multicultural Book Collections to six outstanding Lights On Afterschool sites. In addition, RIF developed engaging motivational literacy activities for each site to use as a resource for their event. In Washington, D.C., RIF will join with Afterschool Alliance to host a joint event at Kimball Elementary School, located at 3375 Minnesota Ave SE. The event will take place from 3:30 – 6 p.m. and will include a presentation of a RIF Multicultural Book Collection, a read-aloud by special guests, arts and crafts, and a pep rally assembly.
"We are so pleased to have Reading Is Fundamental as a partner in Lights On Afterschool this year," said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. "Afterschool programs do so much to help children gain literacy skills and get a lifelong appreciation for reading and books. Reading can inspire children to dream big and to do and try things they never otherwise could imagine. It's an honor to work with RIF, the nation's largest literacy organization and one of the most respected literacy programs, on this crucial issue."
Since the Afterschool Alliance organized the first Lights On Afterschool event in 2000, it has grown to include more than 7,500 events across the country and at U.S. military bases worldwide. This year, more than a million people are expected to participate.
