Reading Is Fundamental and First Book Unite to Give 1 Million Books to Children in Need Nationwide

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2012
– Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and First Book, two of the nation’s leading children’s literacy nonprofits, have united to distribute 1 million new, high-quality children’s books to RIF programs nationwide throughout this school year. Through this partnership, 250,000 books will go to children just in time for the holidays – a time when many children in need lack access to books at home. Primary funding for this initiative was provided by Macy’s, a long-time RIF partner, along with support from several major children’s book publishers.

The remaining 750,000 books will be distributed nationally before the spring and summer breaks. In addition, RIF is also providing free activity sheets for children and parents to engage in fun reading-related projects as an extension of the books they bring home. The winter activity sheets are available at www.rif.org/winteractivities.

“Earlier this year, RIF launched Book People Unite, a campaign to rally support for children’s literacy. This partnership is the epitome of Book People uniting,” said Carol H. Rasco, President and CEO of RIF. “At a time when many children will be saying goodbye to the books they cherish at school, many of them will be bringing home their very own books for the first time. We are very grateful to First Book, Macy’s and our publishing friends for joining with us to give books to kids most in need.”

“Getting kids the new, high-quality books they need to become strong readers is what we care most about at First Book, and it’s a mission we share with our friends at RIF,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “We’re grateful for the chance to put brand-new books into the hands of children at so many RIF programs, and we’re thankful for the hard-working teachers and program leaders who make it all possible.”

The Book People Unite campaign is anchored by a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) with beloved book characters and a star-studded soundtrack. For more, visit www.bookpeopleunite.org.
